Mindful Moment

Distance

When we think about growth, we often think of what’s next.

Where we are heading.
What goal we want to hit.

Rarely do we look the other way.

Where have we come from?

Think back to the version of you six months ago.

What feels easier?

What do you understand now that you didn’t then?

Do you recall the moments when things began to change?

Take a slow breath.

Let yourself acknowledge the distance between there and here.

Beyond the Moment

Look Back to See How Far You’ve Come

We’re very good at moving the goalposts. And because our attention naturally moves towards what’s next, we can miss the significance of what has already changed. Some changes happen gradually enough that there is no single moment when we think, I’m different now.

Looking back creates contrast. It gives us another reference point besides the gap between where we are and where we want to be. This matters, because if we only measure ourselves against the next goal, we can feel like we’re always falling short, even when we’re clearly moving forward.

Sometimes growth shows up most clearly in what no longer happens.
The conversation you finally have, the boundary you hold without guilt, the mistake you recover from faster. And often the clearest proof that there has been progress is that something which once drained you, no longer does.

Try this: Leave yourself a marker.
In your phone’s Reminders app, write down one thing that seems difficult, uncertain or unfinished right now. It doesn’t have to be lengthy. Just something real. Add the date and schedule it for 6 months from now. When it appears again, the situation may have passed or it may still be there, but you’ll notice you are not the same person facing it and that is where the progress lies.
